PRIVACY POLICY

Interntown Privacy Policy

Interntown Ltd. ("Interntown", also referred to in this document as "we" or "us") is dedicated to upholding the privacy of the personal information entered by its users (also referred to as "the user" or "you"). Due to the nature of Interntown, we collect certain private data from our users, and we want to clarify the terms and conditions of how we collect and use this information. This Privacy Policy explains exactly what information we gather, how we use it, and how you can amend this information.

When you are using our website and entering your information, by doing so you are also accepting and agreeing to the procedures and terms described in this Privacy Policy. Thus, you agree that by visiting and using Interntown, you are explicitly consenting to and complying with our usage of any information that you provide, and how we disclose the information. You are also consenting to receipt of emails from us, as described in greater detail below. By clicking the "Accept" button during the registration process, you are accepting that we will collect, use, and transmit any of the personal information you have provided, according to the conditions of this Privacy Policy.

You are advised to read this Privacy Policy carefully and in full - it affects your rights and liabilities under law. If you do not consent to the terms of this policy, or how we collect or pass on personal information provided by our users, we strongly suggest that you do not use our site.

Please note that we may link from our website to third party content or services, and such third party sites are not subject to the terms delineated in this Privacy Policy. We suggest that you review the individual policies in place on such websites in order to understand their own safeguards for the protection of your privacy. We do our utmost to protect your information from unacceptable use and unauthorised access by third parties, but we have no control over said third parties and cannot claim responsibility for the way in which they use any information you provide or otherwise make available online. Consequently, we would strongly advise against posting any kind of sensitive or personal information to any third party sites unless you are familiar with and consent to their own Privacy Policy.

What personally identifiable information do we collect from our users?

We need to collect certain identifiable information about our users due to the nature of the service we provide, most notably your name, contact information, academic history, etc. This information is collected from your college, university or other educational institutions such as career centres and alumni organisations. This information is also collected from you, but only on a strictly voluntary basis, either when we expressly request it from you, or when you choose to upload your résumé or CV to the site, as well as cover letters, qualifications, or any other documents that contain your personal information. We also collect certain personal information when you:

  • (a) initially register on Interntown
  • (b) fill in your online profile
  • (c) register for certain services through the site
  • (d) respond to questionnaires and surveys
  • (e) enter contests or promotions on the site.

Under certain circumstances we may also request other information from you, and you can choose whether or not you wish to provide us with answers or not. This applies to issues such as your opinion regarding various features or characteristics of the site, the types of internships or candidates you are interested in, your views on particular career-related topics, etc.

How do we use the personally identifiable information that we collect?

Apart from the practices outlined in this Privacy Policy, we will never disclose, share or expose your personal information to/with any third party without your express permission.

The personally identifying information that we collect from you is used in the following ways, and for the following functions:

  • (a) to permit you to create an account on the site
  • (b) to fill out your site profile
  • (c) to allow us to give information about you to potential employers, and show that you are interested in certain placements
  • (d) to provide employers with the necessary information, services and products to conclude the recruitment and hiring process
  • (e) to allow you to provide us with comments and feedback
  • (f) to permit you to contact us and for us to answer you
  • (g) to convey certain information with you, such as changes in the site and its services, or any other occurrences that might affect your experience of using the site and its associated services
  • (h) to provide statistics to certain colleges, universities, career centres or alumni associations who are members of our network
  • (i) to manage surveys, questionnaires, polls, contests and other activities of which you have chosen to be a part
  • (j) to counteract fraud or other illegal activities, and to protect ourselves and our users from people who violate our Terms of Use, including sharing information with other companies, corporations, courts or other government entities
  • (k) to exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims in the event of any subpoenas or legal action against us
  • (l) for specific functions which will be explicitly communicated to you when we request the information from you.

If you decide to publish your profile publicly on the site, or upload a CV/résumé or any other document containing your personal information, employers signed up with Interntown can find you by searching our database. This means that any of your personal information that you make public is searchable and available to browse, but only to those employers who are signed up with us and have access to our database. However, while we always endeavour to limit database access only to employers who have an account on our site, we cannot completely guarantee that other parties will not gain access to our database through illegal means.

Employers and otherwise who have gained access to our database may choose to retain a copy of your profile or CV/résumé in their own files, or add them to their own database. We cannot hold any responsibility for the privacy, retention or otherwise use of our users' CVs/résumés or personal information when they are no longer stored on our network.

If you upload or create your CV/résumé on Interntown, note that they must not contain delicate personal information concerning any of the following:

  • (a) your racial or ethnic background
  • (b) political affiliation, or membership of any political party
  • (c) religious or philosophical beliefs
  • (d) physical or mental health
  • (e) sexual preferences or orientation
  • (f) drug or substance addictions
  • (g) criminal charges and convictions and/or any associated penalties incurred
  • (h) any national identification number, such as a Social Security Number, National Insurance ID, etc.

In the event that you give us details of a professional reference, it is your responsibility to guarantee that your reference is aware that we have his/her contact details, and has agreed in writing that it is permitted for us to have them.

If (and only if) you have given us your permission, we may utilise your email address or other contact information to share articles, news related to the career industry and other related information, as well as inform you of contests, promotions or any other services or products that we or our business partners offer that may be of interest to you. If you have also opted in to additional notifications, we may share your contact information with our business partners and other third parties to allow them to communicate with you concerning products, services, promotions and contests offered by them that may be of interest to you. Of course, you can opt out of these messages at any time (see below).

We do use the skills and expertise of other companies and individuals for functions that we cannot do ourselves - for example, our web server hosting, data analysis, marketing, and credit card payment processing. These third parties will have as much access to your personal information as they need in order to do their jobs, but they are bound by the same Privacy Policy and must therefore comply with keeping your information private and confidential.

Occasionally we may also divulge personal information to fulfil specific legal and/or regulatory requirements, or if we judge that such disclosure is legally mandatory to protect the rights of others or to prevent harm. We may also divulge personal information to a third party who acquires all or a controlling stake in our business, whether by merger, consolidation or acquisition of all or a significant share of Interntown's assets. Additionally, if Interntown is the subject of bankruptcy proceedings, Interntown (or its trustee in bankruptcy) may transfer, license or dispose of personal information in a manner approved by the bankruptcy court.

All of our users should be made aware that when they voluntarily divulge or share their personal information (such as their full name, email address or other contact information) to other people (e.g. via chat rooms, message boards and forums, etc.), this information can be harvested and used by others. This may result in unsolicited email spam or otherwise communication from third parties, for which we cannot be held responsible.

If you disclose any information to third party sites that are linked to or from Interntown, different rules will apply to the accumulation and/or disclosure of said information by said third party. We cannot be held responsible for a third party's use of your personal information. We strongly advise that you review the individual policies for said sites before disclosing any personal or otherwise sensitive information.

What is Interntown's Opt-In/Opt-Out Policy?

When you register on Interntown, you will be asked if you wish to receive certain kinds of communication from ourselves and/or business partners and associated third parties. If you do not wish to receive these messages, you can easily opt out by ticking the appropriate box saying that you do not wish to receive such communications. By opting in to receive such communications, you give permission to Interntown and its business partners to send you selected messages that may be of interest to you.

We do, however, reserve the right to communicate directly with you, whether you have chosen to opt in or not, in order to update you on our services, to let you know about changes to the website, or any other events or activities that might affect our users' access to the Interntown website.

If you opted in upon registration but later decide that you wish to opt out, you can easily do so at any time. Simply log in to your account, visit your profile, and you can modify your communication opt-in options.

How can I edit or update my personal information on Interntown?

We allow our users to modify their personal and contact information at any time - simply log in to your Interntown account, visit your profile, and you can modify the details of your choosing.

What else should I consider when divulging my personal information on the site?

We advise that you never divulge your social security number or any nationally identifiable number to a prospective employer before you are contractually obligated to do so. We also recommend that you do not provide credit card or bank account numbers, or any kind of details of monetary transactions to employers, until you are contracted to work for them.

Interntown also recommends that you do not provide any non-work-related information over the phone or online, such as social security number, marital status, blood type, eye colour etc.

Users should also be cautious when dealing with businesses and contacts outside of your own country.

What online data do you gather when users visit the site?

The IP address of every user of the Interntown website is logged, and we also monitor other data and information about the collective activities of our users. This data is anonymous, is not utilised to track or inspect the personally identifiable information of our users, and is used only in the aggregate. This data is gathered and monitored only to analyse trends, aid with website administration, identify registered users when they visit the site, give targeted advertisements to users based on the geolocation of their IP addresses, and gather broad demographic information for collective use.

This information may be shared with our business partners so that they can better understand our user demographic and patterns of site usage, but only on an aggregate basis and in a way that is guaranteed not to reveal any personally identifiable information about any of our users.

Our site makes use of cookies - both session and persistent cookies - in order to remember user preferences and information pertaining to the user's current session. Using cookies helps us give our users faster, more reliable, more personalised and more recently updated services.

All user accounts (including registration information, profile and CVs/résumés) are protected by passwords, so that only the user has access to his or her account. Users are responsible for keeping their password secure and confidential, and we recommend that our users use a strong password for their account. Any personal information collected from our users is located on limited access servers. Our site is hosted on a secure server which makes use of firewalls and other technology to prevent entry or intrusion from outside intruders.

However, while we are dedicated to limiting access to outside intruders and maintain the security of our site, there is no such thing as 100% security and we cannot completely guarantee that other parties will not be able to circumvent our safety measures and gain access to our database through illegal means.

When you purchase services through our website or otherwise make a payment on Interntown, your credit card information is protected through SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption, making it far more difficult for unauthorised parties to capture or take your credit card information during transmission. We use a service company to process all credit card transactions, and use secure pages for all our order and payment forms.

As well as using user passwords and SSL encryption to protect our users' sensitive information, we also restrict access to our users' personal information in the office environment. Only employees who specifically need information (for example, an account executive or members of the billing or customer services departments) have access to personally identifiable or sensitive information. We also update our employees whenever new policies are added to our security and privacy procedures. Our employees are also informed and reminded about the weight of importance we place on privacy, and what they can do to safeguard the information of our users.

Does Interntown's privacy policy ever change?

Yes; we may occasionally believe it to be required that we modify our Privacy Policy to reflect changes in how we gather and/or use our users' personal information, as well as to notify users of amendments in privacy-related laws, or privacy-related industry standards. Therefore we reserve the right to amend this Privacy Policy at any time, and will post any updated version on this site. Information will always be managed and processed according to the most up-to-date version of the Privacy Policy at the time the information is handled. Your continued use of the Interntown site after the Privacy Policy has been amended will signify that you accept the changes therein.
